The Chinese CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, must appear before the U.S. Congress. There, on March 23, 2023, he will be heard on issues including TikTok’s data protection and privacy policies, TikTok’s impact on children and TikTok’s relationship with the Chinese Communist Party. For example, the members of congress are concerned that underage TikTok users are being shown harmful images.
Committee chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers explains: “We’ve made our concerns clear with TikTok” and it is now time to get “complete and honest answers” from TikTok.
MPs in the Netherlands are also becoming increasingly concerned about TikTok. BNR reports on a real TikTok exodus: MPs are abandoning TikTok or deleting the app ahead of the Provincial Council elections because of the privacy risks associated with using TikTok.
Stichting Take Back Your Privacy will, of course, continue to monitor these developments closely.
